This movie is somehow based on Dr. Edward Rosenbaum's book (1988) "A Taste of My Own Medicine". Story goes like this .... Dr Jack is a surgeon at a leading hospital , successful in his profession but failed in his married life ... he treats patients with medicine and surgery only, no sympathy, no emotions .... but later he himself was diagnosed as a case of throat cancer .. and after becoming a patient he realized everything ... he initially had problems with the treatment but later was treated successfully and was cured ... and after returning to work .. he was totally changed .. a different man .. a different doctor .... he starts teaching his juniors about the importance of being sensitive to their patients.
